Combat Tracking for the Modern Warfighter
The Combat Tracker Basic Course is an intensive training program built to develop combat-ready personnel capable of operating as effective visual trackers in demanding and hostile environments. The course delivers the essential skills, tactical understanding, and operational discipline required to locate, follow, and exploit human sign in support of real-world missions.
Students are trained to track and pursue hostile elements, recover lost or missing personnel, uncover enemy hide positions, and identify indicators linked to IED emplacement and other threat activities. Through structured instruction and field application, participants learn to interpret the ground as a source of actionable intelligence — transforming subtle disturbances into clear, mission-relevant information.
LSCO and the Decisive Advantage
In today's evolving battlefield — shifting toward conventional conflict and Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) — the ability to read human sign remains a decisive advantage. When modern systems are compromised or unavailable, trained trackers retain the capability to gather intelligence and maintain the pursuit using nothing more than skill, experience, and the terrain itself.
A core principle of this course is the ability to operate without reliance on technology. Personnel are taught to detect and follow spoor using observation, terrain awareness, and proven tracking techniques. At the same time, the program prepares them to integrate seamlessly with supporting assets such as K9 teams and technical systems when available — maximizing operational effectiveness.
Instruction combines classroom learning with progressive, scenario-based field exercises that challenge students to apply their skills under realistic conditions.

The Combat Tracker Basic Course is delivered as a 10-day, 100-hour composite program structured in two weeks. Both weeks are required to complete the full Combat Tracker Basic certification.
Week I — Combat Tracking Fundamentals (5 days / 50 hours)
Subjects covered in Week I:
- Introduction to Combat Tracking
- Tracking Terminology and Definitions
- Combat Visual Tracking Team Roles and Responsibilities
- Identification and Interpretation of Visual Tracking Indicators
- Human Gait and Step Dynamics
- Principles and Rules of Tracking
- Lost Track (Spoor) Procedures
- Individual Tracking Techniques
- Tracking Team Formations and Movement
- Immediate Action Drills
- Tracking Pit Training
Week II — Advanced Combat Tracking Operations (5 days / 50 hours)
Subjects covered in Week II:
- Mine and IED Detection
- Spoor Aging and Time Assessment
- Counter-Tracking and Deception Techniques
- Camouflage, Concealment, and Tactical Movement
- Tracking to Contact and Surveillance Operations

Weapons Intelligence and Evidence Awareness
The training emphasizes evidence awareness and handling. Participants gain the knowledge to recognize, protect, and report track-related forensic evidence, directly supporting intelligence collection and contributing to Weapons Intelligence operations.
Why the Instructor Matters
Fernando Moreira brings 40+ years of active operational tracking experience to every course, and his instruction reflects current field doctrine rather than legacy curriculum. He has trained military special operations, federal law enforcement tactical units, and international defense forces. The Combat Tracker Basic curriculum reflects operational conditions Fernando has actively worked in across multiple continents — not reconstructed case studies from secondary sources.
